How I decided to become a Doctor of Chiropractic

I had always dreamed becoming a doctor. A desire to help to heal people is simply in my DNA! I graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2006 with the intention of beginning medical school soon after. At this time I worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in the Emergency Room at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida. Trauma Medicine was fascinating to me- the idea of saving lives in split second scenarios is awe-inspiring. However, the reality of Emergency Medicine was not what I had originally envisioned it to be. Pharmaceutical companies and major insurance companies appeared to dictate patient care more than the physicians. At about this time, I was in an  accident resulting in a severe case of whiplash. Coming from a medical background, I sought out the appropriate medical treatment for my condition and tried to go on with my life. However, I was not recovering. Several months after the accident, I was still in agonizing pain every day. Persistent neck pain and headaches dominated my life. I relied on medication, which took the edge off of my pain at best. What happened next changed my life in many ways.
I moved into a new house in Daytona, where on either side of my lived a Chiropractor that taught at the Chiropractic College which was built several miles away. At the time I didn't know anything about Chiropractic, except that people went to them to have their "backs cracked". My new neighbors were able to convince me to allow them to treat me, and within several weeks I found myself in a relatively pain-free state. To say I was amazed was an understatement. Why didn't my medical doctor recommend this to me? I had suffered for months with no end in sight until I found Chiropractic. It wasn't long before my neighbors recommended that apply to the Chiropractic College in Port Orange instead of to the various medical schools I was considering. In the winter of 2008, I applied to Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida and was accepted! I began my Chiropractic education in July of 2009 and graduated Cum Laude in September of 2012.
I enjoy sharing my story of Chiropractic, and how it saved my health and brought me to a career that I truly love each day and am able to bring to the patients that I serve.
